At the beginning of this month, we shared with you our business vision and goals for 2016. We have some big plans for Letter Me Loved in the near future, and we wanted guidelines to focus our creativity and ambition.
However, Letter Me Loved is just a small portion of our life, our “part-time fun,” as we like to call it. And, our goals and dreams extend far past hand lettering and watercolor design. Many of these goals focus on taking care of our whole selves and being more intentional with our time and all the ways we use it. Because we believe that growing spiritually, creating healthy habits and developing relationships helps us be more successful in all our work.
With that in mind, here are our 2016 personal goals…
Wake up early. Late last year, around the time we started this lovely little business, I lost my routine of waking up around 5:00 a.m. As a result, a lot of things suffered. I didn’t have time for my Bible study. I didn’t have time for my workouts. I rarely even had time to shower. So far, I’ve been able to reestablish my early rising habit by beginning my “go to bed” routine at around 8:00 p.m. It might sound crazy, but I know I function better as an early bird instead of a night owl.
Read more books. That Netflix thing is crazy addictive, huh? My Goodreads account provided me with a summary of my reading in 2015, and I couldn’t believe how truly little it was. My personal goal this year is to read two books a month: 1 fiction + 1 nonfiction. Consequently, that means not as much TV in the evening, and so far I’ve been okay with that. If you have any recommendations, please leave them in the comments. I just finished The Lunar Chronicles, so I’m searching for my next nonfiction read!
Create (& keep) a budget. We’ve had a budget on Mint since we were married and I started working, but it was more of a loose guideline than anything else. Thanks to my parents, I established great habits like regular tithing and saving when I was younger, and we’ve been doing that. However, there are several things we want to save up for (did someone say post-dental school vacay?) and to do that we’ll need to be extra cautious with our spending habits.
Be more disciplined to read. Like Jenny, Matt and I both realized how often we just sit in front of the television watching our latest Netflix show. We both have set a goal to read more scripture and other books this year. As easy as it is to turn on the tv and just zone out after work, we are trying to both read after dinner before we can binge watch any Netflix.
Be more disciplined to rest well. Now, when you hear the word rest you may just think I need more sleep. To be honest, I get plenty of sleep. I hope this year to find a good weekly rhythm to rest well spiritually and physically. Instead of over-planning every minute of every week, Matt and I are trying to be more intentional to set aside time to Sabbath. This is hard for me because there is always something for me to do at home or for Letter Me Loved. So here’s to resting well and putting the long to do list aside.
Be more disciplined in the kitchen. I love to cook (and eat). In fact, it is one of my favorite things to do. But I find in the busyness of full-time jobs and several obligations I don’t always make it a priority to plan ahead, make healthy choices or try new recipes. So yes, I hope to make healthful choices this year, but also I hope to try lots of new recipes and enjoy time in my kitchen.
Now it’s your turn! We love hearing other people’s personal goals – it’s something that motivates us to go after our own. So please leave us a comment sharing one personal goal you’re striving for in 2016!
